1. Ajaccio, Corsica
Stay
About the city: Ajaccio is the capital of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica. The city is located on the west coast of the island. It is famous for being the place where the Emperor Napoleon was born and it is impossible to escape his presence. Streets, squares, buildings, restaurants and more are named after him all over the city. And it is no surprise since Napoleon didn’t forget his birthplace: he gifted it with its first sewer system, planted some eucalyptus trees to drain the marshy areas, and made Ajaccio the capital of Corsica. Ajaccio’s centre is not that big and is easily walkable. The main shopping area is the rue du Cardinal Fesch and there is also a museum displaying the painting collection amassed by Cardinal Joseph Fesch. Next to the museum is the Imperial Chapel, built around 1860 that holds the tombs not only of Fesch but also of Napoleons parents. At the end of the street you come into the Place Foch, home to the town hall. Place Foch is in the centre of the old town and was once the site of the town’s medieval gate. This lovely square is lined with cafes and restaurants and a statue of Napoleon as first consul standing over the Four Lions Fountain. After crossing Place Foch, we will find the cathedral and Napoleons birthplace, now a museum. The Cathedral of La Madonuccia is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and was built at the end of the 16th century. The main alter was given to the city by Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon's sister, who was baptized there in 1771. Ajaccio is a small place, but big-hearted and full of authenticity. A place where nature is never distant and where, if you slow down and soak in the Mediterranean laid-back atmosphere, you just might find yourself enchanted.

About the city: L'Île-Rousse is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It was founded in 1758 by Pasquale Paoli to create a port that would not be in the hands of the Genoese (such as Calvi.) As Italian was until 1848 the administrative language of Corsica, the town was originally named Isola Rossa (Red Island) from the eponymous reddish color of a rocky islet that served as a natural harbor. Along with Saint-Florent, it is one of only two communes in the département to have a French name — all the others have kept their Italian names despite the repeated demands of Corsican nationalists.

About the city: Bastia is the lively and cultural city in Corsica as well as its business and financial centre. It was the capital of the Genoese administration of Corsica until the mid-18th century. It has preserved the architecture and atmosphere of that time, and has a rugged, unrefined charm. But Bastia is undoubtedly Mediterranean. The old quarter, known as the Terra Vecchia, is full of wonderful streets, cute shops and flamboyant Baroque churches. There are many things to explore like the 15th century Oratoire St.Roch with a rich Baroque interior and a fantastic organ or Corsica's largest church, the 17th century Saint-Jean Baptiste cathedral. In the nearby Place du Marche, there is a flea market every weekend. The area surrounding the Citadelle, Terra Nova neighbourhood, is one of the most colourful parts of town. Just take time to wonder around its restored houses and mansions. Stroll around the Palace of the Governors once grand gardens, Jardin Romieu, from where you can enjoy a view of the Vieux Port, the Old Port. The Vieux Port is a wonderful part of the city, with tall, faded buildings surrounding a marina with posh yachts. Corsica’s most successful commercial town is a lively and charming place with a wonderful port, interesting architecture, good restaurants and many cultural events. Bastia is much more than sun and sand.
